The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a federation of seven states or Emirates on the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula in the Middle East on the Persian Gulf, bordering Oman and Saudi Arabia. The seven states, termed emirates, are Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, and Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al-Quwain. There are two Omani enclaves surrounded by UAE territory, known as Madha and Nahwa. . The largest emirate is Abu Dhabi which contains the nation's capital city Abu Dhabi.

Before 1971, the UAE were known as the Trucial States or Trucial Oman, in reference to a nineteenth-century truce between Britain and several Arab Sheikhs. The name Pirate Coast was also used in reference to the area's emirates in the 18th to early 20th century. Abu Dhabi, the federal capital, is famed for its beautiful corniche, towering modern skyscrapers and attractive gardens and parks. It offers a host of entertainment and dining options in luxury hotels.

The UAE, rich in oil and natural gas, has become highly prosperous after gaining foreign direct investment funding in the 1970s. The GDP  is currently the 14th in the world and 3rd in the Middle East after Qatar and Kuwait as measured by the CIA World Fact book, or the 17th in the world as measured by the International Monetary Fund. Only about one-fifth of the emirates’ residents are citizens. The remainder are mostly foreign workers and their dependents, with South Asians constituting the largest of these groups. Arabs from countries other than the United Arab Emirates and Iranians account for another significant portion.

United Arab Emirates is becoming less dependent on natural resources as a source of revenue, petroleum and natural gas exports still play an important role in the economy, especially in Abu Dhabi. A massive construction boom, an expanding manufacturing base, and a thriving services sector are helping the UAE diversify its economy. Nationwide, there is currently $350 billion worth of active construction projects. UAE has  some of the finest hotels in the world, miles and miles of golden sandy beaches, warm Arabian seas, wonderful  marine life, modern  shopping malls, exotic souks, exciting bars and nightclubs, superb restaurants offering a range of cuisine from around the world, excellent sports , leisure facilities, stunning desert landscapes and rugged mountain ranges.
